Having grown up in Mission Viejo, Kirk Mulgrew, M.D., was delighted to return to Orange County for his pediatric residency at CHOC. Katie Ginder, D.O., immediately knew she wanted to train here when she came for a medical school rotation.
That was four years ago. Both elected to stay on an extra fourth year at CHOC so they could help train the pediatricians and pediatric specialists of tomorrow. As the second team of chief residents to manage two University of California, Irvine/CHOC combined residency classes, plus third-year CHOC residents, that’s a tall order.
The combined PL-1 and PL-2 classes each have 30 residents. Additionally, Dr. Mulgrew and Dr. Ginder work with the18 residents from the CHOC PL-3 class, and the UC Irvine PL-3 residents who rotate into the program.
“Our goal is to train excellent physicians,” Dr. Mulgrew said.
What comes next after a year of scheduling, managing and training almost 100 pediatric residents, not to mention all those morning reports?
In a few months, Dr. Mulgrew heads north to Seattle Children’s Hospital, where he will begin a sports medicine fellowship through the University of Washington. Dr. Ginder, looks forward to returning to the Denver area, where she is pursuing general pediatrics practice opportunities.
