The 2025 administration of gene therapy to treat sickle cell disease marked more than an historic first for Rady Children’s Health Orange County. It also changed the trajectory of a young adult’s life and capped a two-decade journey for the physician and the hematology team who delivered it.

This new feature highlights recently hired physicians at Rady Children’s Hospital Orange County, formerly called CHOC.
The job requires teamwork, stamina, a mastery of multi-tasking, and the ability to remain cool-headed in the unpredictable and often emotionally charged environment of a pediatric emergency room.
CHOC’s Heart Institute hopes to add a future lymphatic program as a result of long-distance referrals and requests for support.
